[Various WORKS ON PAPER]
by Barry Peterson
"It is hard to describe the thing that binds together the work of an artist, architect and printmaker, but here is a very brief attempt;
An architect focuses not so much on the masses of walls, floor and roof, but on the voids, the spaces and light that occur between them. As an artist I tend to focus on motion, gesture—especially in my figurative work. As a printmaker it is not so much the objects I depict that matter most, but the atmosphere that holds them fixed and (moderately) still. In all cases the focus seems to be the elusive things that exist because of, and adjacent to, the solid, matter-of-fact and very tangible things in the world. That seems to be the common thread that spans the various media I have leaned to use so far."
"Painters, sculptors, designers of all types and especially architects use drawing as a means to another end. But I have always stumbled at and never gotten past "The Drawing" as a thing for its own sake--end of story. Ultimately it is for the memorializing of something rather illusive and momentary that one draws. The mediums of graphite, charcoal,chalk, ink etc, which are very quick in use and lend themselves to spontaneity, are perfect for addressing the unnamed moment, the incomplete, unclosed situation--or those strange little isolated frames in your own personal movie called life--not sure why they are there, but they seem a necessary filler...the sudden pinning down with a dagger a transient rat or a passing ghost that tries to slip by unnoticed while you are looking.......uhh, as you are....
I'm sorry;
what was I saying again?
Anyway, enjoy. [in moderation, of course.....]"
