[No Name Series Monoprints]
or...minor hallucinations for etching press, Simple Green and paper.
The following are "one-off" prints of drawings which were printed on painter Leslie Allen's etching press in her old studio at the ICB. These were from the No-Name series but are taken one step further in development. Since both the drawings and the prints were done with Leslie close at hand, I thought it might be a good idea to include her prints as well. The combination of our work will likely make a good future show titled, "Under the influence". You will see why soon enough.
The drawings were made with compressed charcoal, which was used wet. The liquid medium, as always, was the beverage of choice at the moment. Beer seems to make the best, most fluid drawing medium--or at least I think so. Andersen Valley Brewing Company's Boont Amber is the medium/drink of choice for myself, but Leslie will tell another story. Wine, very sadly, does not seem to work so well (for this, anyway). Once we are in the studio working with the press, the drawings are given a dousing of Simple Green cleaning solution to loosen up the charcoal, then they are cranked through the press. If you see these prints in person, you will see a pale green atmosphere in them, which comes from the cleaning solution. After pressing, some prints are worked further with graphite, charcoal or Xerox toner.
